Interviewing Dominic Bresser

We are pleased to introduce a new series of interviews with the partners of the Matisse Project. This series will provide an inside look at the researchers and professionals involved in the project, offering insights into their work and the project’s goals.

Join us as we learn more about the people contributing to the Matisse Project and hear their perspectives on the important work they are doing.

What is your role in the project?

We are contributing to the development of the composite electrolyte system, its integration into the electrodes and cells and the eventual realization of the structural battery cells.

What research are you conducting at your Institution and how is it applied in the MATISSE project?

My group focuses on the development and research of alternative electrode materials and electrolyte systems for lithium and sodium batteries as well as related energy storage technologies. The aim is to develop a deeper understanding of the underlying mechanisms and processes that enable and determine the reversible storage of charge carriers and their efficient transport.

How do you collaborate with other partners in the MATISSE project to achieve your goals?

We are closely collaborating especially with AIT on the development of the structural battery as well as with Sensichips for the combination with the on-cell sensors.

How is your institution benefiting from participating in the MATISSE project?

The development of advanced electrolyte systems is one of our key research activities and the targeted scale-up within MATISSE allows us to evaluate the applicability of the herein studied system. The development of structural batteries with its particular requirements is, in fact, something that we started rather recently and its fascinating to see how they might help to make airplanes more sustainable.

How do you envision the results of MATISSE contributing to a more sustainable world?

Electrifying transportation is key towards the successful transition to renewables only – and this includes apparently also airplanes (at least as far as possible). There are still rather few activities compared to EVs, and all the more it is important to work on this.

Looking to the future, what impact do you think the MATISSE project will have on the industry and society as a whole?

Given the strong partners in MATISSE, this project might make a true difference and provide a great step forward towards the successful commercialization of structural batteries for application in airplanes – and, thus, help to lower their carbon footprint.

What do you like to do outside of work? Favourite hobbies or pastimes?

Traveling, exploring new places and cultures, spending time with family and friends
